Q&A
What are good classes for beginners?
If you are new to blacksmithing, we start students off with blacksmithing fundamentals. You will get an introduction to forging, tapering, punching, bending, twisting, upsetting, and basic forge welding (if time allows). Also beginner blacksmith classes will include basic shop safety, management of coal and/or propane forges and hammering techniques.
Can I make a knife?
Our master blacksmith, Roy Adams, is not a knifemaker. He prefers to forge ornamental iron. However, if you have interest in forging knives, a firm foundation in blacksmithing principles will help you excel. A class like "Mastering the Fundamentals" would be applicable to you.
What type of classes do you offer for intermediate/advanced?
More advanced level students can focus on forging specific projects or learning
certain techniques. Students may choose to bring a sketch of a project they wish to make. There are an endless variety of projects you may wish to forge, it is limited only by your imagination. A few examples are a rose sculpture, a pot rack, a door knocker, and kitchen utensils to name a few. You must let us know in advance what your interests are, so that we can prepare in advance. Also, one of most popular classes is "Forge Welding Intensive" where we deep dive into various types of forge welding and help students master the art of the forge weld.
How much does class cost?
The cost for a private class is $300/day (and consists of an eight hour day). We ask that you pay a non-refundable deposit of $150 at the time of booking. The remainder owed towards the class will be due the day of class.
How far in advance should I book?
We scedule classes out at least 30 days in advance. Reach out via call or email to discuss sceduling options with us.
Where should I stay?
Christ Centered Ironworks does not have sleeping facilities on site. There are several
accommodations nearby including a bed and breakfast, Harrisville State Park
camping and cabins, and an assortment of cottages.
What is available for meals?
We recommend you eat breakfast prior to attending class. Students are welcome to join us for lunch. Restaurants in Harrisville include Shotmakers, Alcona Brew Haus, Theresa's Diner, and Harbortown Pizza.
What should I bring to class?
We recommend bringing your personal safety gear (safety glass/regular eyeglasses and an apron), your favorite forging hammer if you have one, close toed shoes, and natural fiber clothing (cotton shirt, jeans, or workpants.)
